Biography

Born in Rome, John William Waterhouse was a classically trained painter of classical, historical and literary subjects. He assisted his father in his studio in Rome, who was also a painter, before entering the Royal Academy Schools in 1870 in London. Waterhouse married Esther, but did not have any children. JW Waterhouse, who was affectionately named Nino throughout his life, completed more than 200 works of art during his life which was appreciated both during his life and ever since.

Waterhouse’s classically trained style is immediately recognisable by the way that he is able to capture feminine beauty with seemingly effortless precision. Although Waterhouse is often considered a Pre-Raphaelite due to his artworks mythological subject matter, his actual style of painting is essentially Neo-Classical. Waterhouse was influenced by poetry, historical themes and modern painting techniques. These influences resulted in works which are rich in the expression and meaning of the historical themes which they portray, whilst maintaining the high standards and techniques of Classical artistry. Today, two of Waterhouse’s works, The Lady of Shalott and Ophelia, are often ranked as the most recognizable and loved of 19th Century British art.
